The establishing of National AlgaePARC Mongstad (NAM) is a result of cooperation between research environments and industry. The new project plant at the Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) is designed to test and cultivate different micro algae with high levels of Omega-3, transforming CO2 in the process. The new plant has a gathered volume of 4000 litres, larger than previous laboratory plans at Marineholmen, which had around 250 litres.
The plant will be operated by CO2Bio together with UiB. CO2Bio is owned by Marine Harvest, Lerøy Seafood, EWOS, Salmon Group, Grieg Seafood, NORCE, Bergen Teknologioverføring (BTO) and Nordhordland Næringslag. The University of Bergen is the builder of the plant, and has the professional responsibility.
Two research projects are currently under way, CO2Food and Algae2Future. The iFISHiENCi project, supported by the EU Horizon 2020 programme, will join the plant from 2019. All three projects is research on micro algae in fish feed, and as an ingredient in food.
