Chicken waste as a protein source in salmon feed

Increased use of leftover raw materials from chicken in feed for salmon

The project will provide knowledge that facilitates the increased use of chicken waste raw materials in salmon feed. Processes and selection criteria will be developed that ensure high biological quality in chicken meal and the effects of long-term feeding with chicken meal on salmon growth, health and quality will be documented. In addition, consumers' acceptance of chicken meal in salmon feed will be mapped and how information affects willingness to pay for salmon will be investigated.

NCE Seafood Innovation leads the Communication and Industry Contact work package.

Background
Around 85% of greenhouse gas emissions from farmed salmon come from feed. Using chicken meal to reduce raw materials with a high CO2 footprint will help reduce these emissions. Upcycling chicken waste contributes to better resource utilization in food production, which in turn will contribute to increased sustainability and a more circular economy. Only 8% of today's raw materials for salmon feed are produced in Norway, and projects aim to facilitate an increase in this share.

Project goals
The goal is to facilitate increased knowledge that will lead to increased use of chicken waste products in salmon feed.

Progress
The project started in November 2024 and will end in December 2027.
