Gain sought-after expertise in the industry

Belmin Husanovic, Seafood Trainee at Lerøy

From computer technology to the seafood industry

Belmin Husanovic is 23 years old and has a passion for computer technology and digital innovation. After

Having studied both computer security and computer technology at the University of Bergen, he has now got a job as a Seafood Trainee at Lerøy Seafood Group.

This study background has given me a solid understanding of various aspects of computer science, from computer security to technological development .

Jon Homme Tjøtta was originally trained as an associate professor in mathematics, but then he took a bachelor's degree in information science afterwards. Now he has just started as a trainee in IT operations at Lerøy.

Opened my eyes to the possibilities after "Sildikon Valley"

While Jon came across the job advertisement on finn.no somewhat by chance, Belmin says that it was a somewhat unusual summer experience a year ago that made him want to work in the seafood industry.

My interest in technology and digital solutions led me to an exciting summer experience last year in what is actually called "Sildikon Valley" in Haugesund. Here I collaborated with Haugesund Municipality and Atea to develop digital tools that could analyze transport patterns in the city , says Belmin.

He says that the experience and knowledge he gained there showed him how technology can help shape and improve cities and societies. The combination of his academic background and a deep interest in digital innovation motivated him to explore new challenges.

That's when I heard about Lerøy and their ambitious technology initiative. Lerøy's vision to modernize the seafood industry through technology, along with their clear roadmap for future development, appealed strongly to me. They not only wanted to be part of the technology revolution, but also to lead in the implementation of modern technology solutions.

An industry with great potential in digitalization

Although many companies have come a long way, the industry is largely in the early stages of digital transformation. Nevertheless, both Belmin and Jon have great faith in the seafood industry's potential.

When it comes to the seafood industry and digitalization, I think something big is happening. Many companies in this industry have started to embrace digital tools to do things like keep an eye on production, track where the food comes from, take care of quality and make sure things flow in logistics. This opens up for better efficiency, more accuracy and a stronger focus on being sustainable , explains Belmin.

I have the impression that digitalization and technology are areas that are being heavily invested in and that I find very exciting to be involved in. It seems like a lot of interesting things are happening in the future, perhaps especially related to using machine learning for various tasks , says Jon.

Companies can get the expertise they need through Seafood Trainee

There is also no doubt that recent graduates with IT expertise play an important role in creating progress and innovation in the industry.

Since the industry is investing so much in IT, I think that more talented IT students will be important. I find that there are many talented people in the industry already, but I think that IT students can contribute useful updated knowledge and new ideas , Jon points out.

Belmin also points out that this expertise is essential for unleashing the potential of modern technology, and contributing to increased efficiency, reduced resource consumption and sustainable growth in the industry, adding:

Students from IT studies have a special expertise in new technology that can have significant value for the seafood industry. They can add new knowledge in the development of customized software solutions, implementation of IoT technology (Internet of Things) for monitoring and automation, as well as the use of data analysis to optimize production processes and decision-making .

Seafood Trainee visited Bolaks in 2022.

As they both point out, there is great potential in achieving a more digitalized seafood industry. It is therefore essential to bring in the smartest minds in the field, and the Seafood Trainee program is an opportunity for companies to acquire the expertise they need.

Want to learn more about the industry

Belmin, Jon and the other trainees will soon meet at the first Seafood Trainee meeting in Bergen. It marks the start of a year with a total of four meetings where they will learn about the seafood industry and the entire value chain.
