From left: Kristian Blom, CEO of AquaCloud, and Nina Stangeland, CEO of NCE Seafood look forward to creating a platform for data sharing that will help realize the value of data and data sharing in the industry.
– This project shows the position AquaCloud has gained within digitalization in the industry, and that we, together with the farmers, are working to create a platform for data sharing that will help realize the value of data and data sharing in the industry. We see that we are a connecting point between players who want to use data to contribute to more insight, value creation and innovation in the seafood industry, says Nina Stangeland, CEO of NCE Seafood.
Increased data sharing can help solve challenges within fish health, environmental parameters and other parts of the value chain. AquaCloud's project will work to make a difference in areas like this, and the project has been granted funding through a 3-year project in Siva's catapult scheme, the Ocean Innovation Catapult Center. The grant will help the project to be financed and work can continue to develop the project to lift AquaCloud to new heights. The project will obtain completely new knowledge, work on development together with research, established companies and others to realize the value of data and data sharing within the aquaculture industry.
Digital transformation
AquaCloud is now a separate company, but is part of NCE Seafood's focus on digital transformation and digitization. Through Aquacloud, Lerøy Seafood Group, Grieg Seafood, Bremnes Seashore, Cermaq, LingaLaks and Bolaks are working together to unleash the potential of data and data sharing across companies. The project also closely connects research players to use aquaculture data to develop new knowledge and insights. The new grant provides additional support for the work to digitize the industry, and the next three years will be used to facilitate further data sharing in the aquaculture industry.
– Much of this is about further developing the data sharing platform. The goal is to build infrastructure and frameworks to be able to share data on a large scale across the industry and to other relevant players, says Kristian Blom, CEO of AquaCloud about the work ahead. The goal is for the platform to be something that players in the industry want to use because they believe data enables innovation and value creation.
AquaCloud is working to develop new datasets and data services to facilitate data exchange. So far, we have had the most success as a supplier for research purposes, but in the future we want to be able to deliver data that has more operational value for suppliers and farmers. Blom hopes that the platform will be something that industry players get involved in because they believe data sharing is important for innovation, and are willing to take the step from today's sharing that is driven by regulatory requirements, to sharing that is motivated by creating new insights and knowledge. AquaCloud already has both large and small companies on the journey, but with more people contributing data, we can build stronger datasets and better insights that can be given back to the individual player and the industry.
High ambitions
Digitalization is necessary to meet current and future challenges in the marine industry. NCE Seafood has therefore identified it as one of five strategic priority areas, and AquaCloud is an important pillar in this work. By spotlighting digitalization, the ambition is that more data, insight and knowledge will contribute to innovation and sustainable growth in the aquaculture industry in the future.
Siva – the Norwegian Society for Industrial Growth – facilitates sustainable growth in industry and business, and through Norsk Katapult they offer facilities and expertise for innovation. The Ocean Innovation Catapult Center is one of five national catapult centers, which offers test facilities and expertise to develop, test and simulate technologies for the ocean industry.
