"Fish vaccines are very important for reducing antibiotic use in the Asian aquaculture industry. Today's agreement is a big step towards more sustainable production," says Fisheries Minister Elisabeth Aspaker in a press release.

The signing took place in connection with a sustainability seminar in Jakarta.

– Today, Norwegian farmed salmon is antibiotic-free thanks to good vaccines. The world needs more food and the development of vaccines is crucial to ensuring sustainable development. Norway is at the forefront when it comes to fish health and I am concerned that this knowledge can contribute to food production in other parts of the world, says Aspaker.

Indonesian authorities will make facilities available for testing. The long-term goal is to develop vaccines specifically for the Indonesian aquaculture industry. Pharmaq has developed a vaccine for tilapia that has been used in other tropical countries. Indonesia has limited access to fish vaccines and the use of antibiotics is high.

Tilapia is a tropical freshwater fish, originally from Africa, but most of the farming takes place in Southeast Asia where there is a large and growing production.
