UiB strengthens its ranking

Last year, UiB performed particularly well in the QS by Subject category Earth & Marine Sciences. At that time, UiB came in 42nd place in this category, which includes various subjects and departments at UiB. This year, Earth and Marine Sciences is ranked between 51 and 100.

This time, marine research has been followed by archaeology and anthropology in the top 100 in this ranking. This is just one result of the targeted work to position UiB more clearly internationally as a leading research university.

In 2014, UiB was not represented in the top 100 in any categories. At that time, the university was in the top 200 in eight categories. In 2016, the number of UiB subject areas in the top 200 increased to nine.

– The fact that we are ranked among the 100 best universities in the world within geosciences and marine research, anthropology and archaeology, and are among the 200 best in as many as nine subject areas, shows both a clear profile and quality in a wide range of subjects. This must be fully in line with the Minister of Education and Research's goal of quality, says Dag Rune Olsen, Rector of the University of Bergen.

In the category of communication and media studies, UiB ranks between 101 and 150. UiB also does well in the categories of history, modern languages, psychology, politics/international studies and education. In all of these, UiB is among the top 200 universities in the world.

Looking at the full list, the 2016 QS ranking by subject area shows that UiB is ranked among the top 350 universities in the world in 15 subject areas. In addition to highlighting UiB's top research, this also shows that the university's focus on breadth is paying off. UiB was assessed in 34 of the 42 categories that QS ranked in 2016.
