Organized Seafood Case Days at NHH

This is a completely new project that we will launch in 2024, and builds on a similar concept that NCE Seafood had great success with in high schools in 2023. The pilot implementation took place on Wednesday, April 17th at NHH. Students at NHH's Innovation School were given a real case by Lerøy, who challenged the students to find solutions related to submersible cages.

Connecting students to the business community

Seafood Case Days will contribute to targeted talent attraction within fields of study that are particularly relevant to the individual partner. "By solving real case projects that are concrete and real, students get a taste of the exciting challenges they themselves can help solve through a seafood career," says Fride Iversen from NCE Seafood.

"Seafood Case Days provide many opportunities for NHH and the students. Through realistic and concrete tasks, they get to use the methods and tools they have learned through their studies in a real setting." – Steffen Juranek, Professor at NHH

Pål Erik Michaelsen, head of branding and innovation at Lerøy, was also present throughout the day. He also expressed the value of the students' perspective.

"This is incredibly valuable because we get an outside perspective from someone who doesn't know the industry before. The students are not influenced by what is being done today and limitations. They approach the problem from an academic perspective. It is extremely valuable." - Pål Erik Michaelsen, Head of Brand and Innovation at Lerøy.

Exciting ideas

The perspectives and solutions presented impressed Glenn Olsnes, project manager for submersible technology at Lerøy, among others. He presented the case, which dealt with the challenges of diving operations in connection with submersible cages, and the need for innovative solutions.

The student group was divided into seven groups that contributed different solution proposals. Thi Dieu Thao Le, a student at NHH's Innovation School and a participant on the winning team, commented on the experience:

"We really enjoyed getting the case challenge. During the process, we learned more about Lerøy's business model. We landed on a solution that was economical, efficient and not too time-consuming. In addition, the jury considered it to be innovative and would work in practice."

Case Days will be part of several initiatives for competence and talent attraction in the industry, and it is open to all seafood-related companies to participate.
