Pilot project for increased knowledge about standardized environmental data

Grieg Seafood and NCE Seafood will contribute to this and have therefore joined forces to create a competence program for standardized environmental data.

-We have a lot of data, but as long as it is not standardized, we spend a disproportionate amount of time sorting and cleaning it before we can analyze and create value from it, says Trond Kathenes, Digitalization Director at Grieg Seafood.

– Therefore, we must increase knowledge about why standardized environmental measurements are important and what benefits we will gain from standardized data sets.

Background in the standard NS 9417

The idea for the competency program arose in connection with the revision of NS 9417, which is a standard for terminology and methods for documentation of salmon and rainbow trout production. The revised version was completed in November and now also provides guidelines and recommendations for standardized environmental measurements in the industry.

– During the revision of NS 9417, we started the development of a digital competence program to increase knowledge about the importance of standardized environmental data and hopefully also increase engagement around conducting standardized measurements, says Solveig Holm, Senior Project Manager at NCE Seafood.

– If the industry uses the NS 9417 standard as a least common multiple, we will take a long step closer to collecting good data and standardized data sets that contribute to increased insight for further growth and development in the industry, says Trond Kathenes.

– Standardized data and the use of similar terminology provide a better basis for our analyses, which benefits both the administration and the industry, says Ingunn Sommerset, Section Manager at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute.

In addition to Grieg Seafood and NCE Seafood, the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, the Institute of Marine Research, AquaCloud and Seasmart have contributed to the program. The pilot project is supported by Rogaland County Council.

Want to take the program further into the industry

The competency program should provide knowledge about why standardized measurements are important, the collection of data, the significance of the data, the opportunities provided by using standardized data, and the opportunities for sharing standardized data.

– This is a pilot project in collaboration between Grieg Seafood and us, but we want to roll it out throughout the industry over the next few years, says Nina Stangeland, CEO of NCE Seafood.
