Sludge as a driver for industrial symbiosis at Samnøy

Land-based aquaculture can serve as a foundation for new circular value chains, where sludge from the aquaculture industry is utilized as a resource for other local industries.

This project explores the potential for industrial symbiosis, enabling stakeholders to collaborate on using bio-based by-products for energy, nutrients, and materials.

Background

With increasing pressure on resources and sustainable solutions, a circular economy is vital for the value chains of the future. This project focuses on how resources from land-based aquaculture can be used to minimize waste and support local industrial clusters by incorporating biomass and by-products from aquaculture.

Project Goals

The goal is to develop industrial symbiosis where sludge and other by-products from aquaculture are converted into energy and biochar, which can be used in other industries. The project aims to contribute to sustainable growth and resource utilization within the region.

Progress

The project is investigating various technologies for treating and converting sludge into usable resources, such as biochar and heat. The results may provide a foundation for implementing circular solutions in the region.
